Christian Gruber, Managing Director Tipico-Deutschland, presented case study “Safe hands – better together: Sponsorship as keeper of the integrity of sport” at the SpoBiS 2016
With almost 1,800 participants, more decision-makers of clubs, associations and companies than ever participated in the SpoBiS in Dusseldorf on February 1 and 2, 2016. This year at Europe’s largest sports business conference, the focus was particularly set on the topics sponsorship and digitization. Traditionally, many of the sport industry’s representatives attending were also part of the program. Just like Christian Gruber, Managing Director of Tipico Deutschland Marketing und Vertriebs GmbH, who presented a case study entitled “Safe hands – better together: sponsorship as keeper of the integrity of sport,” to the interested expert public.
“Partnerships of sports associations and clubs with betting providers of integrity are not only drivers of integrity in sport but indispensable in its fight against crimes such as match fixing and the like,” was the core thesis of Gruber’s presentation. A thesis in stark contrast to the opinion commonly spread in media that the proximity between betting providers and sport through sponsoring would pose a threat to the integrity of the competition.
For example, Gruber explained that suspected cases of match manipulation can only be tracked effectively with the assistance of betting providers of integrity. Since 2009, every single arrest and conviction of those criminal activities was only possible through the gaming industry’s active participation. Experience from other markets have also shown that bans on certain types of bets ultimately helped only the black market, but did not help to solve the problem.
Gruber stressed out that Tipico, as the market leader in Germany, already contributes to the promotion of the integrity in sport in many places. Be it through partnerships with organisations such as Sportradar, the Austrian Playfair Code or by supporting grassroots sports. Ultimately, it must be in the interest of all sponsors to protect the sport against manipulation and fraud, says Gruber.
