- A close race for the Champions League title is expected: FC Bayern are among the top five favourites
- Dortmund, Leipzig and Stuttgart have a good chance of progressing to the next round
- The top scorer award is likely to go to Mbappé, Kane or Haaland
The race for the Champions League title this season is more evenly matched than it has been for years. According to the latest analysis from the Tipico Sports Data Center, the defending champions from Paris and FC Barcelona are among the leading contenders. From a German perspective, it is encouraging to see that FC Bayern München are close behind and tied with FC Arsenal. Record champion Real Madrid are also among the top favourites.
Paris and Barcelona lead the field of favourites
This means that five clubs have similarly good chances of lifting the trophy. Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona are leading the race: both teams currently have a 16.6 percent chance of winning the title. Close behind are FC Bayern and Premier League champions and last year’s finalists FC Arsenal, each with 15.4 percent. Real Madrid round off the list of favourites with a 13.3 percent chance of winning the title.
Some way behind them is a group of English contenders comprising Manchester City (9.1 percent), Liverpool FC (7.7 percent) and Manchester United with five percent.
No chance of the title, but are all the German teams on course for the play-offs?
From a German perspective, apart from FC Bayern, no other Bundesliga side currently appears to have realistic hopes of winning the title. Borussia Dortmund is still regarded as Germany’s number two behind the record champions and currently has a title probability of just two percent. This puts BVB joint 13th with SSC Napoli. Behind them, RB Leipzig follows in 15th place with a 1.4 percent chance, whilst VfB Stuttgart is listed in 17th place with 1.25 percent. The bookmakers’ predictions nevertheless paint a positive picture for the Bundesliga: all four German representatives are currently expected to finish in at least a play-off spot.
In the race for the top scorer’s crown, a clear picture is emerging at the top: Kylian Mbappé leads the field. Last season’s top scorer netted 15 Champions League goals and, with a probability of 23.3 percent, is considered the clear favourite. Some way behind are Bayern striker Harry Kane (12.5 percent) and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (11.1 percent).
