New association promotes market-based regulation in betting and gambling
On September 29, 2016, the Austrian Association for Betting and Gambling (Oesterreichische Vereinigung für Wetten und Glücksspiel, OVWG) announces their formation, positions and demands with a press conference. Members of the OVWG are national and international gambling providers operating in Austria.
“Our members are committed to effective compliance requirements and rely on binding regulatory content. We are ready to actively support the public sector in the creation of effective regulation of betting and gambling with our expertise”, says Christian Gruber, Managing Tipico Deutschland and member of the OVWG board.
The new lobby group for online sports betting and gambling is aiming for a nationwide, regulatory framework for the entire industry, which provides legal certainty and is in accordance with the provisions of European Union law. The association also advocates for the integrity of sport, for effective prevention of gambling addiction, for protection of minors and for a comprehensive crime prevention.
“Unfortunately, the Austrian market for betting and gambling is lagging behind reality. This applies to the non-conformity with European law of the regulation of the online offer as well as the inconsistent taxation of different game types”, Mag. Claus Retschitzegger, President of the Oesterreichischen Vereinigung für Wetten und Glücksspiel (OVWG), comments on the situation in the domestic market.
