Tipico brand ambassador hands over award for Best player of the season
Football celebrates its best: On Sunday 28th August, the whole Austrian football elite gathered inside the Vienna Town Hall for the 20th Bruno Gala. As the final highlight, Tipico brand ambassador Michael Konsel handed over the sought-after award for Player of the Year to Jonatan Soriano. In the last Tipico Bundesliga-season, the Spanish forward of champions Red Bull Salzburg became top-scorer in Austria for the third time already.
In the annual voting by all Bundesliga players, Soriano won the award ahead of neo-Werder Bremen player Forian Kainz and his ex-team mate Naby Keita (now playing for Tipico partner club RB Leipzig) coming in third. With 21 goals the Spaniard not only was last season’s best finisher but also top-scorer with additional eight assists and an overall score of 29 points. Like last year, the scoring crown was handed over to him during the gala also. Among the almost 450 guest were players from the Tipico Bundesliga, the first division, the national squad, as well as a big number of guests of honour.
The Bruno Gala is held under the auspices of the VdF (Footballers‘ Association) and the union “Younion”. The award is named after Bruno Pezzey, who until now is deemed to be one of the best defenders in Austrian football history. Pezzey participated in two World Cups for Austria, and celebrated huge successes with Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen in Germany. He died of a sudden heart failure in 1994, at the age of 39.
